Certificate in Linguistics

The School of Modern Languages, in partnership with the School of Psychology and the School of Interactive Computing, offers an undergraduate certificate in linguistics. This interdisciplinary certificate (12 credit hours total) explores the physical structures and mental processes involved in human language, the psychological and social factors enabling language acquisition, comprehension, and production, and the application of computer science to language and technology.

Program Overview

This certificate is an excellent complement to the study of computer science, psychology, or a specific foreign language. It is designed for undergraduates interested in theoretical or applied linguistics, culture, psychology, or language technology, and for students pursuing careers in language education, educational design, language technology, and human/computer interaction.

Certificate Requirements

  • Total Credit Hours: 12
  • Grade Requirement: All courses must be taken on a letter-grade basis with a grade of C or better.

Course Structure

  • Required Course (3 credit hours)
    • LING 2100 - Introduction to Linguistics
  • Three Elective Courses (9 credit hours)
    • Any LING course(s), such as:
      • LING 3100 - Applications of Linguistics
      • LING 4015 - Advanced Topics in Language Processing
    • Any foreign-language Modern Languages course(s) with significant linguistics content (approved by the linguistics coordinator), such as:
      • Applied Linguistics (German/French/Spanish/Japanese)
      • French Phonetics
      • Kaleidoscope of Chinese Language
      • Spanish Sociolinguistics
      • Bilingualism in the Spanish-Speaking World
    • At most ONE psychology course with significant linguistics content (approved by the linguistics coordinator), such as:
      • PSYC 2760 - Human Language Processing
      • PSYC 3012 - Introduction to Cognitive Psychology
    • At most ONE computer science course with significant linguistics content (approved by the linguistics coordinator), such as:
      • Natural Language Processing
    • At most ONE linguistics course from another accredited university (approved by the linguistics coordinator)
    • No more than TWO Special Topics Courses (6 credit hours)

Certificate Request

If you're a graduating senior who has completed or is about to complete the requirements for a certificate in linguistics, please fill out the certificate request form. Your electronic certificate will be emailed in late May/early June.
