Eboni Goar graduated with an M.S. in Global Media and Cultures in 2022. Her final GMC project was titled Heroes and Villians in Japanese Manga: A Dissection of Role Language and her advisors were Kyoko Masuda and Ida Yoshinaga. Now, Goar lives in Tokyo, where she helps Japanese students study abroad.
1. What do you do?
I contact new and existing overseas university/language school partners, research new schools, universities, and summer programs, and complete visa applications and homestay/dormitory applications.
2. What’s the coolest part of your job?
I am required to communicate in both English and Japanese with my coworkers so I can put my language skills to use.
3. Why are you passionate about it?
I am passionate about my job because I can give back to young people in Japan who want to study abroad by providing them with various program choices and doing the necessary behind-the-scenes work to make their dreams come true. This, I feel, is the best way to show my gratitude for my ability to study abroad in Japan two years ago.
4. Which skills from your IAC degree have helped you be successful in this career?
Research skills, in particular! I studied various research methods in the GMC program and learned how much time it takes to do research on projects and topics. I have to do research nearly every day at my job, so my GMC degree has taught me to always engage in some sort of research or study.
5. What’s your #1 tip for students and alumni interested in your field?
Keep challenging yourself with your target language, whether that be through studying abroad in a foreign country, passing a standardized test in the language, doing research in the language, or interpreting for a live event. Always be willing and ready to experience growing pains in learning your target language.
