The LBAT Spain Spring semester is designed as an expanded version of the 5-week summer LBAT. It is a complete 12-week immersion program aimed at developing and improving language and cross-cultural skills while experiencing daily life in Spain. The academic offerings include social, cultural, and linguistic diversity issues and trends, as well as business, industry, innovation, media, and arts coverage within the contemporary political and economic context of Spain and the EU. Furthermore, students will be able to complete an internship abroad with a choice of social work or different companies and institutions. The Spain LBAT program is composed of in-classroom and out-of-classroom coursework, cultural visits and excursions, student research, and field-based projects. All program activities require exclusive use of Spanish in the classroom, in community interaction, and during professional and cultural visits.

Host Institution
Our host institution is located in Alcalá de Henares, an international college town about 40 minutes by train from the center of Madrid. The University of Alcalá de Henares -Instituto Franklin was founded in 1987, and its activity focuses on postgraduate research and education related to American Studies and Bilingual Education through research projects, scholarships and grants, and its dissemination in its own publications and scientific events. They offer undergraduate and graduate programs and host an average of 600 international students every year.
Alcalá de Henares and the Universidad de Alcalá were both declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1998. The city is known for being the birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes (the author of Don Quixote de la Mancha) and for its 15th-century university. It combines the best of a medieval and modern city with a full range of amenities for international students: hotels, restaurants with local and international cuisine, gyms, sports areas, banks, travel agencies, shopping centers, theaters, and cinemas.
Accommodations
Students may choose to live with a host family in Alcalá de Henares or reside at a residence. Host families are carefully vetted and supervised. While living with a host family, students have three meals a day, Wi-Fi, laundry, and weekly cleaning.
At the dorm, students receive three meals per day and may request a special diet. Laundry service is not included; however, students have access to laundry facilities within the residence hall. The residence hall is located in a fully renovated historic building, just five minutes from the university. It offers cleaning services, high-speed Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and 24-hour security. It has a games room, a courtyard, and a gym.
Courses
Students can choose 12 or 15 credit hours from the course options below.
SPAN 4158: Social, Cultural, and Linguistic Diversity in Spain (3 credits): Cecilia Montes-Alcalá
This is a language-immersion program. Students applying to this program are required to have completed SPAN 2002 or the equivalent experience at the high school level.
Cost
The program fee is $10,900.
The fee includes one-way airport transfer, housing with three meals/day, as well as cultural activities and health insurance.
The fee does not includea $500nonrefundable deposit due at the time of application, tuition, airline tickets, independent travel, and additional meals.
Application and Payment Deadlines
Spots are limited, and students will be accepted on a rolling basis. Apply as early as possible to guarantee your spot via Atlas.
If you are a non-Georgia Tech (transient/special) student, you are required to submit TWO separate applications to the Office of International Education.
Fee Payment Information:
A $500 non-refundable deposit is due at the time of application.
The first half of the program fee is due Oct. 30, and the balance is due Nov. 30.
Please adhere to the deadlines stated for the program. Please observe the information in Payment Options to ensure that your payments are processed at the Bursar’s Office on time. Fees will be charged to your OSCAR account on the due dates. Make sure you make all necessary payments on time in order to avoid a hold on your account. Students expecting financial aid must submit a letter from the Financial Aid Office stating the allocation and date of payments expected.
Tuition, Financial Aid, and Scholarships
Tuition and student fees are due according to the Registrar’s schedule for summer tuition. Tuition is assessed based on residency, matriculation term and program type as outlined on the following page: Financial Information & Resources | Office of International Education. Tuition rates are posted by the GT Bursar for studentsbased on term, level of study and degree.
When Georgia Tech students study abroad on a Tech program, their financial aid travels with them - including scholarships, grants and loans. Additionally, there are outside scholarships that students may be eligible to apply for. To learn more, please see the following resources:
Students who cancel their participation in the program after being accepted will be subject to the following non-negotiable fee schedule:
• Students canceling after getting accepted will lose their $500 deposit.
• Students canceling after Oct. 30 must pay 400 EUR (at the current exchange rate).
• Students canceling after Nov. 15 must pay 50% of the program fee.
• Students canceling after Dec. 15 must pay 100% of the program fee.
Program descriptions and fees are subject to final approval by educational units and the Office of International Education. Georgia Tech reserves the right to alter or cancel this program due to low enrollment, unavailability of a professor to teach a planned course, or other unforeseen circumstances. Once Georgia Tech has made payments to service providers, or if Georgia Tech cancels the program before departure or while the program is in progress for reasons beyond its control, such as political unrest or danger to participants' safety, only those fees that Georgia Tech is able to have refunded by service providers will be returned to participants.
