ATLANTA — The Atlanta Global Studies Center (AGSC), a joint project of Georgia State University and the Georgia Institute of Technology, will present the fourth Atlanta Global Studies Symposium April 13-15.

The free event — ATL is Global — will feature sessions focused on global education, language learning, sustainable development, community engagement and a daylong workshop for pre-K-12 teachers. In-person sessions will be held at the Georgia State College of Law, with some hybrid sessions offered.

“The symposium offers an exciting lineup of academic panels as well as multiple opportunities to connect with a diverse network of researchers, educators, community organizations and industry partners interested in language learning and international education,” said Juan Carlos Rodríguez, co-director of AGSC and an associate professor of Spanish at Georgia Tech. “This symposium aspires to become a national model for the promotion of future collaborations between STEM fields and the humanities/social sciences disciplines in the context of global studies.”

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens will welcome guests to the ATL is Global event April 13 at 4 p.m. and introduce the keynote speaker, Yehimi Cambrón, an Atlanta artist and activist who will discuss the importance of supporting diverse perspectives in education and the arts, and the power of art to expose and address tough social and global issues.

The second day of ATL is Global will feature sessions on topics ranging from “Depolarizing Democracy” and “Combating Climate Change and Environmental Injustice” to “The Future of International Education” and “International Security and Peacebuilding.”

The final day will offer a workshop designed for pre-K-12 teachers interested in integrating global skills and language learning across the curriculum. Sessions will cover a variety of topics including community building, advocacy, global skills and career education, and teacher self-care.

“ATL is Global is the culmination of the collaborative relationships and projects that have been undertaken with myriad partners over the last four years,” said Anthony Lemieux, co-director of AGSC and a professor of communication at Georgia State. “We hope participants will be inspired by the power of collaboration that is evidenced during this event which will celebrate the global vitality of Atlanta.”

Attendees of ATL is Global will also learn about four collaborative projects at a “Global at Home” showcase highlighting work by the Atlanta Global Research and Education Collaborative (AGREC), an alliance forged by the efforts of the AGSC.

In addition to Georgia State and Georgia Tech, the collaborative includes Spelman College, Emory University, Agnes Scott College, Kennesaw State University and many organizations and businesses. AGREC provides seed funds to collaborative teams to research and address local problems that are being faced globally. Details of the next funding cycle will be announced at the symposium.

Since its creation in 2018, the Atlanta Global Studies Center has worked to leverage Atlanta’s growing global connections and resources to achieve its mission of building international awareness, global competence and language capacity in the region and beyond.

The ATL is Global event welcomes partners, faculty, students, community organizers and the public to connect, discover the impact of collaboration and celebrate the diversity and global vitality of the region.

The symposium’s sponsors include the Emory University Office of Global Strategy and Initiatives, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Global Atlanta.
