You do NOT need to take the placement test if:
- You are beginning study of a language for which you have never earned high school or college credit. You may begin in the 1001 course.
- If you have received or will receive AP or IB credit for language. Visit our AP & IB credit page to see AP and IB language credit awarded by Georgia Tech.
If you want to study Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian, or Spanish, and you have studied that language in high school or are a heritage speaker (you grew up in an environment where the language was spoken regularly), you must take the appropriate online placement test before you try to register for a language course. Some languages, such as Chinese, have courses designed for native/heritage speakers. Some languages also have courses for which native/heritage speakers are not eligible. Be sure to consult the course descriptions in Oscar before registering for a class.
If you want to study Arabic, and you have studied that language in high school or are a heritage speaker (you grew up in an environment where the language was spoken regularly), consult with the appropriate language advisor if you are uncertain about your eligibility for a course.
Based on your score, you will receive a suggested course or level. Register only for that course/level. You may NOT enroll in a course lower than that indicated by your placement test score. If you do, you will be asked to leave that course with no guarantee of a seat available in the correct course.
A placement test score does NOT automatically enroll you in a language course. You still need to register.
You will be asked to submit your placement score via Canvas or bring a copy to class during the first week in order to confirm you are eligible to remain in the class.

Are you ready for your first 3000-level class, but you're not sure what to take? The following steps are suggested to help you make a smooth transition to a higher level of Spanish:
- Take SPAN 3040 or SPAN 3101. These are grammatical/conversational courses that will help solidify your foundation in preparation for advanced courses.
- Take SPAN 3040 or SPAN 3101 (whichever one you did not take in Step 1).
- Take another 3000-level course that interests you.
- Take any other 3000/4000-level courses that interest you until you achieve your goal of the certificate or the minor.
Please note: Four classes (12 credit hours) at the 2002 level or above are required for a certificate. Five classes (15 credit hours) at the 3000 level or above are required for a minor. Visit the Georgia Tech Course Catalog for the full requirements for a minor or certificate in Spanish.
